October 2006

Wireless Internet will be here soon! You’ll be able to enjoy the benefit of high-speed access on your own laptops! We are also scheduled to get a new Gateway computer, and a third patron computer!

`                  Our new magazine order has been placed! We were able to increase our order this year, so come on by and discover the new titles available for checkout! In the newspaper department, we have cancelled the Hopewell News and are now receiving the Smithfield Times and the Virginia Gazette, in addition to our old stand-bys, the Richmond Times Dispatch, the Sussex Surry Dispatch, and the Daily Press.

If you’d like to help with the Haunted House, please contact George Edwards (866-8305) or come by the library for details. We will begin the process on Monday, October 2 and Thursday, October 5, from 6:30 until 9:00. Details for the rest of the month will be determined as we progress; they’ll be posted at the library.              The Friends of the Library will meet on Monday, October 2, at 9:00 AM here at the library. The Friends of the Library are a group that supports the library in its endeavors – joining is inexpensive, and you can help in many ways. Talk with Sue Ehmke or Patty Hertzler for more information.

Stock up on reading material…the entire Blackwater Regional Library System will be closed on Monday, October 9, for an in-service meeting.

Programs

Second Saturday Program celebrates Teen Read Week.  We promise a game that will entertain you! Second Saturday Programs are for any school-aged child, and will be at the library October 14 at 11:30.

Crochet Club, for absolute novices as well as experienced crocheters, will be held Mondays (except the 9th) at 5:00. Virginia Gill teaches class, and supplies are provided if you need them. Please call for details.

September Book Club selection is Lover’s Knot by Emilie Richards. The story takes place in Virginia’s own Tom’s Brook, a small town in the Shenandoah mountains. Kendra Taylor investigates the story behind an unusual heirloom lover's knot quilt left to her husband, knowing that the answers she finds may save her marriage or destroy it.  Book Club selections are a venue for exploring new authors and different genres that you may not ordinarily read!

Story Time, for 3 and 4 year olds, will resume October 3.  It will still be held on Tuesdays, but the time frame has changed… it will now begin at 9:30 AM.

October 15 – 22 is Read Aloud Week. Come to the library Friday, October 20, at 6:00, and we’ll read some fun children’s books aloud! Wear your jammies for cookies and milk!

You think Halloween last year was scary????? Prepare for an even better HAUNTED HOUSE in 2006! Once again, Claremont Parks and Rec and Claremont Public Library present “Beware of the Basement” in the Town Hall. It will be open October 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, and 31. Hours are 7:00 – 9:30. Special Halloween Party for all young trick-or-treaters on the 31st at 6:00.
