November 2005 – You made us what we are today!

At our annual in-service meeting, we were given some amazing facts! Did you know that there are more public libraries than McDonald’s? Are you aware that more kids participate in summer reading programs than play Little League? Thomas Jefferson said that ‘information is the currency of democracy’; more recently, libraries have been referred to as ‘the entrance ramps to the information highway’. Libraries are considered the cornerstones of a community, and that fact is nowhere more evident than in Claremont. Thank you for your support in making the Blackwater Regional Libraries continue to grow, and for allowing us to provide our communities with traditional, as well as innovative, services and technology!

Avoid late fees! Call and leave us a message to renew your books, or just to find out what hours we’re open! Remember, you can return ANY materials you’ve checked out from the library in our drop box located in front of the library, and you can renew or order materials on-line at www.blackwaterlib.org   Come in and browse the shelves for books, DVDs, CDs, videos, and magazines, or use our high-speed internet. You can read local newspapers, check out entertainment for the kids, or ask the librarians what’s good to read this week! Audiobooks make commuting, or mindless tasks, much more bearable! Kids love them, too!

The current library newsletter can be viewed, and old newsletters are archived on www.claremont-va.org   Blackwater Regional Library’s website is www.blackwaterlib.org

A list of volunteer projects is posted on our Claremont bulletin board, located by the front door. Local information for Claremont residents is also available on the board. If you, or your organization, need publicity for events, please bring flyers to the front desk for posting on the board and on the community calendar located on the back of this newsletter.

Don’t forget to vote in the gubernatorial election November 8th!

The library will be closed on Thursday, November 24 for Thanksgiving.

Programs

Book Club selection for November is Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by

Sijie Dai. The book follows two young men’s lives during Mao’s Cultural Revolution in which professionals were ‘re-educated’ by the peasants.  Book discussion is held at the library on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 1:00, which will be November 22.

Second Saturday Program will be “Make a Brick for the Patio Day”. Kids will

make their own bricks, with their own name or design, that will later be laid within our new “Reader’s Patio” located in front of the library. Due to the space limitations, this program will be held at the Town Hall.  Second Saturday Programs are for ANY SCHOOL AGED CHILD, and participants will need to be at the Town Hall by11:00 the morning of November 12.

On November 8th, we’ll have a special guest for Story Time! Deputy Shears, of the Surry County Sheriff’s Department, will read to the children! Story Time is for pre-schoolers, and is held on Tuesdays at 10:00. Please be prompt if you would like to participate!

Crochet Club, for novices as well as experienced crocheters, meets Mondays at 5:00. Virginia Gill teaches class, and supplies are provided if you need them.

Displays will feature “American Indian Heritage Month”, and “Peanut Butter Lovers’ Month”, as well as Children’s Book Week November 14 – 20, and Veterans’ Day November 11.

Remember those less fortunate. Bring your dry goods or canned food to the library for a Thanksgiving Food Drive. Donations will be distributed to families who need a little extra help getting through the holidays.  Final day to have your donations included in the Thanksgiving package will be November 22.
