May 2006

We finally have some YEARBOOKS in our reference section! Fred Lamb has graciously loaned us annuals from L.P. Jackson High School for 1957, 1958, 1965, 1967 and 1969, as well as the Surry High School compilation of 1972 – 1978. Kids as well as adults are having a blast finding pictures of friends and family! If you have annuals that you would like to donate to fill in the missing years, please let us know!

We have many new videos that have been donated by patrons. The new shelf has not only provided more space in the children’s area, but allowed us to separate children’s videos and organize items alphabetically.

If you can’t make health-care decisions for yourself, who will make those choices for you?  An “Advance Medical Directive” is suggested by the Virginia State Bar, The Medical Society of Virginia and the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Associations. We have the form available at our front desk and will make copies for you should you wish to complete one.

Claremont’s 2007 commemoration will honor Native Virginians and their invaluable contributions to the settlers. Take home one of the gourd plants we have here at the library, grow it, dry it, make something with it, and we’ll display it during the 2007 Commemoration festivities May 5 and 6, 2007!

Magazines are now bar-coded. This new feature means that you will know which issues are available for check-out, as well as the fact that you can order magazines from other libraries if we do not stock your favorites! There’s quite an inventory here, and they are a great way to make the ferry ride more tolerable!

Remember that all materials (books, DVDs, magazines, CDs, etc) you check out can be returned in the NEW drop box in front of the library. Do you need more time? You can renew items (except DVDs) online at www.blackwaterlib.org or by leaving a message on our answering machine.

The current library newsletter can be viewed, and old newsletters are archived on the town’s website, www.claremont-va.org   Claremont residents - Don’t forget to vote for Mayor and Town Council on May 2!

Gear up the kids for Summer Reading Program! We’ll have many events to stimulate readers of every age! Check out next month’s newsletter for details!

The library will be closed on May 27 and 29 for Memorial Day holidays!

Programs

Book Club selection for May is The Lincoln Lawyer by Michael Connelly. If you’ve not read any of Michael Connelly’s books, now is the time to discover an excellent author!    Second Saturday Program will be on May 13. It’s a fun time for all school aged kids, and meets at the library at 11:00.

Story Time, for 3 and 4 year old kids, will be held on May 2, and culminate with a picnic on May 9.  We learn sign language, and children always receive some form of treat, a sticker, and a coloring page. Story Time starts at 10:00; please be prompt if you would like to participate.

Crochet Club will be held on May 1, May 15, and May 22. It’s an avenue for absolute novices, as well as experienced crocheters, to share their interests, and meets most Mondays at 5:00. Virginia Gill teaches class, and supplies are provided if you need them.
