February 2007

In honor of Black History Month, the Claremont Library is proud to announce that we will be featuring an exhibit from the Library of Virginia about local sculptor Leslie Garland Bolling.  Bolling was born in Dendron in 1898, and from 1925 – 1943, he produced more than 80 portrait busts and sculptures. Please spend some time in our library learning more about this absolutely remarkable Surry native! We also will feature a display on one of Claremont’s own celebrities, Ann Lamb Ellis.

We have had another large donation of videotapes to add to our collection. We receive new reading materials every day. Come browse all our shelves for the best FREE entertainment anywhere around!

Don’t forget that Wi-Fi is available here at the library! Use your laptops inside, or just sit outside any time of day or night, to have access to high-speed internet!  If you have questions about settings or configuration, we have a brochure that will explain it all.

The current library newsletter can be viewed, and old newsletters are archived on the town’s website www.claremont-va.org

Stock up on reading material…All Blackwater Regional Libraries will be closed on Monday, February 19, for Presidents’ Day.

Programs

Second Saturday Program celebrates sculpture!  Come show your creative side by creating a work of art.  Second Saturday Programs are for any school-aged child, and will be at the library February 10 at 11:00.

Crochet Club, for absolute novices as well as experienced crocheters, will resume February 12, 19, and 26. Crochet Club meets most Mondays at 5:00. Virginia Gill will share her knowledge, and supplies are provided if you need them. Please call for details.

February Book Club celebrates Black History Month with a variety of books relating to the Buffalo Soldiers. There’s a choice of novels by Tom Willard and Chris Bohjalian, as well as some non-fiction selections for a better knowledge of these brave African-American regiments.  Book Club is a venue for exploring new authors and different genres that you may not ordinarily read!

Story Time, for 3 and 4 year olds, is held on Tuesdays at 9:30 AM. Children learn American Sign Language, listen to stories, sing songs, and receive a snack and coloring pages related to the day’s lesson.
