February 2006

Many thanks to the Garden Club for the beautiful wreaths on the front doors! The Garden Club works hard to keep our town beautiful – we truly appreciate their efforts.

Special thanks to all the generous people who made our food drive for Thanksgiving and Christmas such a success. The recipients were more than grateful for your kindness.

Blackwater Regional Library has instituted a new policy regarding DVDs. You may only check out 5 per card, and they cannot be renewed. This new policy is an attempt to keep more DVDs accessible to all our patrons.

The Blackwater Regional Library website has been revised. A vast amount of information is available at your fingertips! You can also renew and reserve books from home with your library card number and a pin. Navigate the new and improved website at www.blackwaterlib.org, or come by the library to set up your pin and let us show you

Features of the website!

We are still trying to create a reference section with Surry County yearbooks. If you have old annuals that you would like to donate, please let us know!

We want to start a knitter’s group! If you have an interest in learning to knit, or maybe just be involved with other people who love to knit, please call!

The current library newsletter can be viewed, and old newsletters are archived on the town’s website, www.claremont-va.org

Visit the library to see our current displays for Valentine’s Day, Presidents’ Day, and the special section dedicated to the movie, The New World, that not only portrays our history, but also features some of our own Claremont residents as the stars!

The library will be closed on Monday, February 20th for Presidents’ Day

Programs

We are especially excited to offer the community our

Black History Month Program, Memories of Claremont!

Some of Claremont’s most distinguished citizens will share their reminiscences of our beloved town, the people, and the surrounding area in times past. Flossie Elliot, and the Luster brothers, Harrison and Eugene, will be among the featured speakers. Please be sure to attend this celebrated event February 25, 2006, beginning at 7:00 in Town Hall.

Also in honor of Black History month, the Book Club selection for February is

A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. Set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940s, "A Lesson Before Dying" is the story of one man condemned to die for a crime he did not commit, and a young man who visits him in his cell. In the end, the two men forge a bond as they both understand the simple heroism of resisting--and defying--the expected.

Second Saturday Program will be Oddball Olympics! Come participate in activities like cotton ball shot put, paper plate discus throw, high arm jump, straw javelin throw, and sponge squeeze. It’s a lot harder than it looks! We’ll meet at the library on

February 11 at 11:00.

Story Time, for 3 and 4 year old children, continues every Tuesday in February. Children learn sign language, enjoy books and music, and always receive some form of treat, a sticker, and a coloring page. Story Time starts at 10:00; please be prompt if you would like to participate.

Crochet Club, for absolute novices as well as experienced crocheters, will resume February 13 at 5:00. Virginia Gill teaches class, and supplies are provided if you need them. Please call the library for details.
