April 2008
On Saturday, April 12 at 11:00, author Elli Morris will be here to read from, and sign, her new book entitled Cooling the South; The Block Ice Era 1875–1975. The block ice era may have passed, but Elli Morris brings it back to life in her affectionate look at the manufactured ice business that helped shape the American South. A blend of cultural history, 20th century technology, and personal journey, Cooling the South is the only cumulative body of work on this industry of the past.

National Volunteer Week is April 27- May 3. It’s an opportunity to
recognize those good people who selflessly donate their time, energy, and funds
to make life better for others. We especially salute our individual library
volunteers, along with the Friends of the Claremont Library, for their
graciousness!
Earth Day is April 22. The Claremont Branch proudly recycles all
our paper at the Goodson Path Collection Facility. Join with the Surry County
Chamber of Commerce for its annual “Clean Up Day” April 12 (for more
information, or to volunteer, call 294-3104). Also, the county will be eliminating
most local trash collections this summer, and we have information available at
the library about the availability of residential trash pick-up through AVES.
Thanks to the Friends of the Library, we now have
benches for the picnic table! You can utilize our WI-FI access for your laptop
anytime, and now you can sit at the table instead of your car or the steps! The
Friends of the Claremont Library is
an organization that works to improve the existing library resources and
services. Membership is inexpensive ($10 per year), and you will be helping the
library be a more effective resource for the community!
