              April 2007

There’s so much interesting stuff going on this month! Mark your calendars for all the special events that will be happening!

Parks and Rec will be providing Easter treats for kids here at the library on Saturday, April 7, from 11:00 – 12:00. Get your picture taken with George the 6 foot 4 (like Harvey) Easter Bunny.

April 15 – 21 is National Library Week. Celebrate the freedom libraries afford everyone by reading “The Library Bill of Rights” printed on the back of this newsletter.  It’s something we should not take for granted…there are still many places in the world that unbiased, uncensored access is not available to the masses.

April 15 also begins Fine Free Week. Return any library material during this week, and no fines will be imposed! Get that overdue book out of the trunk or the back of the closet! Previously accrued fines will still apply.

National Volunteer Recognition Week coincides with National Library Week and

Fine Free Week. We can’t thank our volunteers enough for the services and funds they so generously provide for our programs!  We’ll have a “Thank You” reception on Friday, April 20, at 5:30 pm.

The members of the Crochet Club have decided to expand their welcome to those who enjoy all types of needlework. Knitting, cross-stitch, needle point - whatever is your choice – we’ll try to help you get started on a project!

Earth Day is April 22. The library recycles all old paper at the Surry Recycling Center at Goodson Path facility. They accept all paper (junk mail, cardboard, newspapers), appliances, scrap metal, aluminum, tires, and other trash that should not go into the dumpsters or landfills. Their hours are very convenient - Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 7:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Do your part to help save the Earth!

April 26 is being declared International Sue Ehmke Day. It's her birthday, but we'd like to recognize all the volunteer work she does for the town. She is tireless in her efforts to make Claremont a better place to be, and we truly appreciate it. Stop in that day and tell her Happy Birthday and Thanks!

The current library newsletter can be viewed, and old newsletters are archived on the town’s website www.claremont-va.org

Programs

Second Saturday Program celebrates Spring, and Earth Day! We’ll have a picnic, plant flowers, and make the library grounds look nicer for the 2007 commemoration in May. Parks and Rec will be working with us to clean up Mancha Avenue and do maintenance to the library grounds. Second Saturday Programs are for any school-aged child, and will be held at the library April 14 at 11:00.

Crochet Club is expanding into a Needlework Club, and will meet on Monday April 2, 16, 23, and 30 (no meeting on April 9) at 5:00 pm. This group is for absolute novices as well as experienced crafters. Virginia Gill will share her knowledge, and some supplies are provided if you need them. Please call for details during our regular operating hours, or leave a message on our answering machine.

April Book Club presents Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier. We can provide regular print, large print, and audio versions. Book Club is a venue for exploring new authors and different genres that you may not ordinarily read!

Story Time, for 3 and 4 year olds, is held on Tuesdays at 9:30 am (except April 10). Children learn American Sign Language, listen to stories, sing songs, and receive a snack and coloring pages related to the day’s lesson.
